Daily Check Lists, Servicing and Maintenance

No matter how large or small, forklifts are sturdy trucks that work hard on the job. For them to perform at maximum level, they need to be checked daily with regular servicing and scheduled maintenance.  This not only helps to prevent a major breakdown but also helps to ensure safety for employees.  From daily check list to the manufacturer’s recommendations, it is important to take care of lift trucks regularly. To keep forklifts performing well, let’s look at how often they should be serviced.

Did you know that various countries have laws regulating service and maintenance of forklifts?  They are meant to protect people working with lift trucks to keep them safe.  In the United States, OSHA requires that all forklifts be examined at least daily before being placed in service. Forklifts used on a round-the-clock basis must be examined after each shift. [29 CFR 1910.178(q)(7)] The operator should conduct a pre-start visual check with the key off and then perform an operational check with the engine running.  Doing a daily checklist can prevent so many unexpected malfunctions and avoid injury.  Some of the items to check for on the list should be inspections of the frames, masts, tires, and dashboard controls. You may be held liable if injury or damage is caused by a poorly maintained lift.

Understand that a daily check list is not the same as service or maintenance.  Daily checks make sure all systems are running properly and catch problems before they start.  Service and maintenance fix problems that are found or correct the issues that may happen unexpectedly.  Forklifts need to be serviced as recommended by the manufacturer.  To determine what service is needed will depend on the hours of operation and age of the machine. Maintenance on items such as tires, brakes, fluid levels, wiring, and hoses will be checked and replaced if necessary.

Don’t underestimate the importance of the check lists, service, and maintenance.  Good service and maintenance only enhance the safety, efficiency, and longevity of a big investment.  It is essential in avoiding accidents and unexpected big repairs.
